Washington: Renewable Energy Systems Tax Exemption to Expire
- May 14, 2013 | Gail Cole
Live in Seattle, Walla Walla or Spokane? Considering the addition of a renewable energy system to your life? If you want to take advantage of the sales and use tax exemption for qualified renewable energy systems, you might want to start shopping now.
The Department of Revenue has announced that the sales and use tax exemption for qualified renewable energy machinery and equipment, as well as related installation labor and services, will expire on June 30, 2013.
If you're hoping the exemption will be extended, think again. While Jay Inslee, the new Democratic governor, is committed to "reduce greenhouse gas emissions and … protect the environment," he is also determined to revitalize the state's economy. To that end, he is looking to eliminate a number of tax exemptions. While this particular exemption isn't on his hit list, he is unlikely to champion its extension.
So buy renewable energy systems soon, have them delivered and installed prior to June 30, 2013, and keep all of your receipts. Anything delivered or purchased after the 30th will be subject to Washington sales and use tax.
